Neves (pronunciation: NEH-vEEs), is the Portuguese word for the plural form of "snow" ((ポルトガル語:neve)). It is a common surname in Portugal, Italy, Brazil, and the Spanish region of Galicia. A Spanish variant is Nieves. ==Etymology and history== The surname Neves has Portuguese origin, it is also of Christian origin since the Middle Ages. According to researches, the origin of the name Neves is given by the Catholic fervor of its members and a tribute to Our Lady of the Snows ((ポルトガル語:Nossa Senhora das Neves)). Our Lady of the Snows was then the name given to a village, in the northwest of Portugal. There was a time that the Empire of Portugal spent time in Brazil to try to get facilities to spread their factories, land grants, captaincies and even provided military posts that were undertaken to defend the new earth, evangelize the Indians and mestizos, in addition to manage slaves. Historians claim that one of the first Neves family members came to Brazil in one of Portugal's most important periods.
